Polystyrene
Micro-/Nanospheres

Applied Polytech offers uniform polystyrene latex microspheres that may be used as-is for self arrangement of microspheres, filter membrane screening, fluid dynamics research, photonic crystal film formation, instrument calibration, particle size standard and chromatographic media or coated with proteins via adsorption for use in diagnostic tests and assays.

Our monodispers microspheres are synthesized via emulsion polymerization, and are available in diameters from 20nm-1000µm, with typical size CVs of 5%-10%. We also supply monodisperse polystyrene microbeads for applications that require highly stringent CVs (e.g. 2-5%) such as size standard particles, instrument calibration and LCD spacers.

Our functionalized polystyrene latex microspheres including carboxyl, amine, epoxy, aldehyde, methyl groups are suitable for the covalent immobilization of polypeptide, protein, antibody, oligonucleotides and other biomolecules.

Features:

  • CV < 3.5% for nanospheres 0.1~1μm

  • CV < 5.0% for microspheres 2μm ~ 100μm

  • Sizes from 0.1 - 100 μm

  • Perfect for fluidic dynamics and micro well fabrication

  • Provided in de-ionized water with surfactant (<0.1%) that can be easily washed away

  • Can be easily surface-functionalized via chemical bond formation

  • Can be adapted to other common biological buffers like phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) or organic solvents like ethanol via repeated centrifugation and resuspension

SDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) and COA (Certificate of Analysis) are included for every purchase.

Note: The polystyrene microparticles might precipitate at the bottom of the containing vial over time which is not a sign of aggregation. The particles can be easily resuspended using sonication (ultrasonic bath or ultrasonic homogenizer) or vortexing.

Amine Polystyrene Beads

Amine-functionalized microspheres offer further options for coupling of biomolecules. Glutaraldehyde is commonly used for the immobilization of amine-containing compounds, and specialized linkers are available for targeted coupling of thiol or carbohydrate moieties.

Carboxyl Polystyrene Beads

Our carboxylate-modified polystyrene latex microspheres are suitable for the covalent immobilization of proteins, peptides, nucleic acids, turbidimetric assay, flow cytometric immunoassay, and homogenous immunoassay. EDAC-mediated coupling is often used for the covalent immobilization of amine-terminated proteins, DNA, or other molecules on carboxyl-functionalized PS and PS/DVB microspheres.
